Formerly known as Hilaria rigida. Warm season, strongly rhizomatous perennial which grows in large clumps and with a shrub-like growth form. Grows best on sandy or gravelly soils, does poorly on clay soils. Tolerates drought better than any other species in the Hilaria genus. Greens up quickly after spring rains and again in the fall when moisture is available. Occurs over large expanses of sand dunes in the Sonoran and Mohave Desert communities. Good reclamation species for sandy or rocky sites.
