Cool season, rhizomatous perennial. Occurs along slow streams, often associated with aspen or coniferous woods and willow thickets up to 11,500 ft. elevation. Prefers areas where seasonal flooding occurs. Spreads rapidly. Excellent for streambank stabilization, forage for waterfowl and big game. Grows in every state except Hawaii.
