Formerly known as Festuca scabrella. Cool season, native bunchgrass that produces thick mats of sheaths and culm bases. Occurs in prairies and open woods up to 6,500 ft. elevation. Prefers dry, deep sandy loam soils, but can establish on a wide variety of soil types. Excellent forage for cattle and horses, good forage for sheep and wildlife.
