Small evergreen tree, 3 to 10 ft. tall, occurring in many soil types but not on saline soils. The most common and widely distributed shrub in North American deserts, often forming pure stands. Found on plains, slopes, and foothills from near sea level to 4,500 ft. elevation. Not grazed by wildlife or livestock.
