Evergreen prostrate to upright shrub from 2 to 15 ft. tall, occurring on medium to well-drained soils whose origin was from a sedimentary or igneous rock; from near sea level to 10,000 ft. elevation. Found on plains, foothills, mountain slopes and ridges. Moderately palatable to livestock and highly palatable to big game animals, especially in winter.
