Low to moderate moisture requirement; full sun. Perennial with black or gray disk flowers develop around a cylindrical cone from which showy yellow ray flowers droop. Blooms summer or fall in open prairies or dry woodlands. Palatable to livestock and therefore is seen mostly in areas where grazing is minimal.
